DISCIPLES IN THE MOONLIGHT:
A LOVE LETTER TO THE CHURCH

BCS alumni Josh Strychalski (’95), Brett Varvel (’04), and Drew Varvel (’09) were recently involved in the making of the film Disciples in the Moonlight, which had its nationwide theatrical debut on July 17, 2024, and remained in theaters for 8 days.

The script, written by Josh Strychalski ten years ago, is set in a dystopian not-so-distant future where the Bible has become illegal contraband in the USA. A small group of Christians are recruited to smuggle God’s Word to underground churches throughout the Midwest. With a ruthless federal agent in hot pursuit, the believers must choose between following the law or honoring and trusting God.

The movie was developed over the years through Brett Varvel’s company, House of Grace Studios. It received its funding in 2022 and was filmed in 25 days. Postproduction work took about a year to complete, after which the film received its distribution with Pinnacle Peak (makers of God’s Not Dead). The film’s accolades include its screening in Cannes, France, glowing reviews from Movie Guide, and a special endorsement from former Vice President Mike Pence.

“What we are most proud of,” said supporting actor Drew Varvel, “is that the film was made as a love letter to the church, and our desire is that it reaches both Christians and non-Christians alike to bring them back to their Creator and cherish the living, breathing Word of God.”
